How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“The Lunar: Remastered Collection is a victim of its own faithfulness. While its upgraded visuals, the retro pixel art character sprites and environments and the hand-drawn cutscenes, are stunning, they only barely distract from an otherwise outdated RPG experience. Lunar’s stories and character might have felt fresh and original in the 1990s, but today, they come across as cliché and uninspired. There is fun to be had here, but there are plenty of other great modern RPGs, too. I have a hard time imagining anyone choosing to jump into the world of Lunar today if they don’t have pre-existing nostalgia for the series.”

“The Lunar Remastered Collection respects the enhanced PS1 versions while also making a few tweaks to modernise parts of each game. While not all changes are entirely successful, and there are other aspects that haven't aged particularly well, we can't deny that Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue are bursting with charm and wit that many RPGs today lack. They might not revolutionise the genre, but if you're looking for a good time and have a little patience, you can do far, far worse.”

“Lunar Remastered Collection is a meticulously curated compilation that preserves the integrity of the original PlayStation versions while introducing subtle enhancements. Gameplay remains largely unaltered, with the most significant quality-of-life addition being adjustable battle speed controls, so some modern players may need to curve their expectations. This feature streamlines combat, expediting minor encounters and grinding sessions. Lunar Remastered Collection showcases two exemplary JRPGs from the genre’s peak era and offers a compelling, accessible package at an attractive price, making it an essential experience for enthusiasts seeking a nostalgic yet refined presentation of these influential titles.”

“In a period when remasters often seem opportunistic, LUNAR Remastered Collection shows how it's done: maintaining the original spirit, improving where possible, and inviting everyone to embark once again towards the stars.”

“Nostalgic value is usually the last thing I consider in my evaluation of a remake or remastered of an “old” game, but Lunar Remastered Collection thrives on nostalgia, but not the rogue kind that makes you remember things better than they were, rather the kind that is respectful of your memories-even for those who, ironically, those memories were never created-and shows you how much things have changed, over time, and how much, only in some cases, to look to those who pursued innovation and did not reiterate it. With a combat system of unexpected depth for two mid-1990s titles, skillful use of pixel art, a manageable and commensurate degree of difficulty for almost the entire experience, and nearly two hours of anime cutscenes between the two games, Lunar Remastered Collection is a JRPG collection that anyone who loves the genre must have in their collection. Is there a rush to get it back? I don't think so, but it is absolutely a title that I think needs to be experienced, aware of the time that has passed and grateful for how the old man can know, if only for a bite, again, whether enough time has passed.”

“The Lunar games embody everything that's nostalgic about 90s JRPGs, from the fun characters and colourful fantasy worlds, to the glorious spritework and catchy music. That said, Lunar's underlying grind can make it difficult to stomach here in 2025 - especially when the Lunar Remastered Collection doesn't do enough to mitigate the series' most tedious aspects. It's great to experience these games again - a fully deserved revival - but it's a real shame that the collection isn't flush with more helpful features.”

“Lunar Remastered Collection respects the original translation, delivering an improved experience for both charming games with a few missteps, making this collection one any JRPG fan should enjoy.”

“There's so much more that could accompany a package like this in addition to combat speed, a cleaner look, and widescreen presentation. Original English VO, missing games, art work, orchestrated soundtrack or even quality of life gameplay improvements could have pushed this to the high standards that companies like Square Enix and Capcom have set. I am happy that Lunar can now reach more people, but I long for more to share from such a cult classic and one of my all time favorites.”

“Lunar is a special series that is of its time. Both games hold up for me, and for anyone that enjoys classic RPGs, this is a must-have collection. I had a fantastic time revisiting these games and am so glad they are finally available without having to go through other means, or spending a small fortune on classic hardware.”

“You can now enjoy Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue in a single title. While there aren’t major visual upgrades, the cleaner presentation, still-impressive animation, and added battle speed options make for a much smoother experience. Though many aspects of the game feel dated, for those with fond memories, it’s like the heart-fluttering feeling of meeting a first love all over again.”

“While Lunar Remastered Collection can sometimes feel a little barebones in its features and improvements, simply having these two JRPG classics available again is reason enough for its existence.”

“Lunar Remastered Collection is exactly what it needs to be: a comfortably nostalgic revisit to a comfortably nostalgic pair of games. Neither breaks the mold, but they remain charming and fun enough that they don't overstay their welcome. The remastering is done with a light touch, and there are times when I wish it had gone further, particularly with the translations. It does well enough to make it the best version of the games to pick up. Sometimes you just need an adventure, and Lunar delivers that in spades.”
