How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 84 | 32 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 98% | 94 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 92 | 42 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 97% | 93 | 2593 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 92.9, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 14,535 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Look Outside is a deeply unsettling horror RPG that mixes exploration, cosmic dread, and unforgiving combat into one unforgettable package. While the punishing difficulty and lack of guidance may frustrate some, the rewards for perseverance make it a must-play for horror enthusiasts. If you’re looking for a game that challenges not just your reflexes but also your sanity, Look Outside delivers an unforgettable journey into the unknown.”

“Francis Coulombe surprises us with Look Outside, a survival horror RPG that uses a simple premise to construct a disturbing, grotesque, and uncomfortably wonderful experience. It makes excellent use of its resources to invite us to discover the mystery that lies outside, with decisions that can change the course of events and characters that are as disturbing as they are endearing. All of this is packaged with a grotesque aesthetic that is graphic at times, while at other times leaving things to our imagination.”

“Look Outside is a unique and dense experience. It leverages its relatively short runtime by being fit to bursting with interesting mysteries, meaningful gameplay decisions, characters both eerie and endearing, and a horror aesthetic that knows when to depict its grotesqueness outright and when to leave things up to the player’s imagination. Its mashup of survival horror resource gathering and turn-based combat is less successful for the way the former garners more satisfying engagement than the latter, but even still, Look Outside is an easy recommendation for anyone, but horror fans in particular, on the lookout for something new.”

“Smart, unsettling, and expertly made, Look Outside stands out as a cosmic horror gem; ten hours of dread-filled exploration that far exceeds its modest price, even if some balance issues remain”

“With an awesome setting and artwork, interesting characters, and a spooky yet intriguing story, I really enjoyed Look Outside and look forward to playing it again to check out other endings. It’s got a lot of charm, and I love the setting. If you’re interested in the story, and you don’t really want to play a survival horror RPG with an emphasis on resource management, the game also offers an easier mode that takes away a lot of the stress. Just make sure if you play, you check out what’s outside the window. You’ll see something beautiful!”

“Look Outside is a moody horror RPG that is greater than the sum of its parts. Despite having a frustrating level design at times, a lack of map and being a little too breezy, what’s forefront and centre is the vibes and setting. Francis Coulombe nails this, providing richly detailed pixel art that depicts grotesque beasties and monsters. Amalgams are made of teeth and limbs. Guys with eye clusters poring out of their torso. The designs are the whole nine yards. It’s also a quality little bite-sized RPG with lots of charming systems and tidbits to flesh out the experience. Just, whatever you do, do not think too hard about the flesh monster that is knocking at your door. I promise all is OK.”

“Look Outside is a brilliant blending of genres that has me going from one extreme to another. From laughing at a character’s dialogue to being utterly terrified the next. Full of replayability, great game mechanics, and raw storytelling emotion, Look Outside is an essential play in the horror genre.”

“One of the best survival horror games of the year and an impressively disturbing mix of EarthBound and The Thing, that also happens to be one of the best bargains of 2025.”

“Look Outside absolutely nails the horror-apocalypse vibe while blending in RPG and puzzle mechanics. It’s messed up, creepy, and downright fun… in a weird way. Retro gamers and horror fans, this one’s definitely worth checking out.”

“Look Outside is a powerful horror RPG, capable of turning simplicity and imperfections into a strong authorial identity. Version 2.0 also adds a ton of content to the experience.”

“Look Outside has been one of the most unexpected and stimulating surprises of this 2025. Its proposal, between turn-based RPG and survival horror, works thanks to a suffocating atmosphere, a grotesque and imaginative visual design and a gameplay structure that rewards exploration and experimentation. It's special, you have to play it.”
