How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“It’s been a long, long time since this style of RPG has grabbed me as Undertale has, and even longer since a small independent effort has been so ambitious, impressive, and unquestionably successful.”

“Undertale is unique because it combines several elements that are common in the new and old market of the genre. It surprises and makes you dream, think and have fun.”

“Despite its inconsistencies, Undertale is a memorable romp that sticks with you long after it's over. It's not perfect and it's definitely not for everyone and that's just fine.”

“Undertale is a brilliant and smartly designed game that understands well what makes a good RPG work; so much so that it can upend expectations and deliver something that's almost a satire of the genre. It's been a long time since we've played a game that manages to surprise so often and in so many unique ways, and even if it doesn't look like much, Undertale has way more going for it under the surface. Excellently written characters, a genre-bending battle system and a solid soundtrack make this one an easy recommendation, especially to RPG lovers. Do yourself a favour and give this one a download.”

“Undertale is a special game, the likes of which come along only once in a great while. It's a look into a parallel universe, one where videogames have realized a bit more of their potential than, say, the AAA industry has in our world. It's a game that can make you laugh while teary-eyed, where both competing emotions are natural and genuine. It's fun, it's sweet; it's an experience that will stay with you long after you've put the game away.”

“It's very short. Even getting all the main endings can be done in under 20 hours, but aside from that, Undertale is a tour de force to be reckoned with. It's filled with heart, humour, and raw emotion, while never forgetting that it's a game. Its gameplay is just as strong as its stellar writing. Undertale is a crowning achievement in RPGs and games in general.”

“Entertaining, surprising, mind-breaking: Undertale is a labour of love that inspires exactly that emotion.”

“Undertale is landmark RPG for those who appreciate something a little different, a game that wrong foots you and delights with the way it mixes up the tried and tested formula which so many adventure games stick so tightly to. A rare pleasure.”

“A mesmerizing emotional trip, Undertale is an indie prodigy full of whimsical humor, battle system innovations and deep moral decisions, even if it feels underdeveloped at some points. You will not be the same after you play it.”

“If you like from crazy fantasy adventures, don't miss this game.”

“Going through the experience today, it's easy to see why Undertale was the talk of the town two years ago. It's not an overly long playthrough, but it's an impactful 7+ hours. A slow burn that starts off cute, but builds up to an absolutely thrilling last couple hours. I'm not sure if the Pope has gotten around to playing it yet, but he would be doing himself a disservice if he hasn't.”
