How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“In its current form, Resident Evil 7 is a damn fine game. Damn, damn fine. Although it initially looks like a desperate chase for Outlast‘s credibility, it slowly reveals itself to be more of a traditional Resident Evil adventure than one might believe, while taking successful elements from contemporary horror games and utilizing them effectively...After Resident Evil 6, this is exactly what the series needed. Both a change of pace and a return to long-neglected roots, it thrills me to say that, for the first time in a long time, Capcom is on the right track.”

“Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is an incredibly well-rounded addition to the survival-horror genre. It successfully reimagines the Resident Evil franchise while helping series newcomers begin their RE journey without the intimidation of pre-established lore or the need to play older, fixed-camera games (such as the original Resident Evil, or Resident Evil 0). Nearly 10 years later, the game still holds up incredibly well.”

“Resident Evil 7: Biohazard with no doubt is the revolutionary game if you decide to play it on VR platform, but if you don’t have the VR - doesn’t worry. You still can receive a lot of positive emotions from basic version. Please borrow in mind that it’s not a classical Resident Evil and not even the RE6. It’s something new that you can’t describe, only feel on a deep emotional level. It’s just a different game that moving the industry forward that will not have any competition for the long time.”

“Capcom finally returned beloved franchise to survival horror roots. Resident Evil 7 is definitely not the best game in the genre (or the series), but it's a solid step away from action-packed Hollywood-style entries to more grotesque, bloody and scary experience.”

“In terms of tone, viciousness, subtext, and sheer oppressive fear, Resident Evil 7 is a beast unlike its predecessors.”

“Capcom deserves congratulations. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is everything you wanted and more. From start to finish, the game will keep you glued to the screen. When it's over, you'll want to play it again, do it differently, try something else, or play on a higher difficulty. The "fear" is at a high level and the story never lets up at any point. Beautiful graphics and respectable content make this one of the best in the series. It's worth remembering that the PS4 version is still compatible with PS VR, which makes everything even scarier. Go for it without fear. Or with it. Well, you get the idea.”

“The fact that Resident Evil 7 performed so poorly when other cloud entries have been comparatively strong really brings home the fact that, although mileage may vary, these issues are completely out of your control. On our evidence, there’s simply no way we can recommend Resident Evil 7 to Switch owners, even if it’s the only option available. It’s a great game utterly ruined by awful performance, and yet more evidence for cloud gaming skeptics that the tech just isn't yet consistent enough to be viable.”

“Resident Evil 7 feels like a breath of fresh air for a stagnant series. Its perspective change makes all more engrossing and emphasizes what makes Resident Evil relevant even after 20 years.”

“Resident Evil is back to its roots and in combination with immersive VR experience, it truly brings the best out of horror survival genre.”

“Resident Evil VII is an amazingly done return of the famous series. The change of perspective is like a breath of fresh air, the story is engaging and interesting, the atmosphere is superb and everything runs smoothly. The 11 hours we spend on the Baker farm prove that Capcom is in great shape. A few months ago I wouldn't have chosen RE7 as a game of the year contender, but now I'm not so sure.”

“It's got some issues with the general pacing and a severe lack in enemy variety, even by usual Resident Evil standards. However, this is still a real special game that's worth checking out.”
