How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 77 | 8 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 81% | 75 | 674 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 72 | 4 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 91% | 85 | 1 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“An addictive, beautifully presented experience that will bring you hours of joy/frustration, GoNNER seems a perfect match for the Nintendo Switch console, offering a gameplay style suited to both quick bursts of play and longer, dedicated sessions. Possibly too tricky for some players, this game requires a lot of determination, offering little respite - expect to be thrown back to the start countless times as you try to progress. If you’re the type who enjoys a serious challenge we recommend giving this title a go; it is one that will reward those who stick with it the most. ”

“With its charming soundtrack, beautiful artstyle and challenging combo system, GoNNER will grab you and it won't let you go. Get ready to spend hours trying to beat your score or competing on its leaderboards.”

“Whether you will choose to buy GoNNER or not is much more of a product of the game experience that you're looking for than how well it executes on its design. If you're a fan of challenging arcade-style run-and-gun shooting with a variety of selectable play configurations (and keep in mind the slight pricetag) I have an extremely easy time recommending it. The aggravation of dying in the current run is almost always quickly followed by the "just one more try" impulse and the relatively short length of an average run makes it even more compelling to play in between other things given the portability of the Switch. If the look or the description of the gameplay doesn't appeal to you I don't know if there's anything that can be said to change your mind. It is a game that is extremely comfortable being what it is and generally executing on its vision very successfully, the only question is if you have the inclination and the nerve to give it a shot.”

“Gonner presents a stiff challenge that might not be for everyone, but if the potential oddities of this disquieting adventure seem up your alley, it’s well worth trying to figure out; just be prepared to maybe look up a few things for clarification. It’s not quite the tops of this take on the roguelike genre, but Gonner definitely earns its spot at the table.”

“GoNNER isn't a roguelike revolution, but a celebration of the best the genre has to offer in a neat little package.”

“GoNNER stands out for its peculiarity, its merciless difficulty level and the audiovisual experience that it provides. While it may not be a game for everyone, it's definitely a game that should be tried by as many players as possible - like it or not, nobody will be indifferent to GoNNER's elements.”

“The roguelike elements drag it down a touch, but this is a memorable action platformer whose surreal visuals work in tandem with some fun 2D combat.”

“GoNNER is a great introduction to the roguelike genre. It may be short, but that doesn’t mean you will blast through it quickly even though its high difficulty may seem a bit too challenging for some. It plays and looks great on the TV screen and it fits nicely as a portable title.”

“Like The Binding of Isaac like I love him, so this is definitely a Must-Have from the world of Roguelike games, and you as a fan will appreciate it highly, but if you're not a fan of this genre, why not join, dark, frightening levels of the surreal world can push and pull you into it's gloomy, but terribly exciting adventure small IICA and a huge whale named Sully.”

“A great gateway title for roguelikes, and a great game on its own rights.”

“While GoNNER may be brutally hard, there’s plenty to find rewarding if you’re someone who doesn’t get frustrated too easily, or who can appreciate the diverseness that the randomly generated roguelike can exhibit. Underneath the game's pastels of bright and intense coloring, there’s great gameplay systems waiting to be explored. If you’re the type of person who loves tight 2D platforming and shooting in your games, then GoNNER isn’t something to be slept on.”
