How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Ruiner, despite some small problems, is incredibly addictive, and completely absorbing your attention. And that's a nice surprise.

Does your heart beat faster when you hear “neon”, “cyberpunk”, and “hardcore” in one sentence? Then you definitely should give RUINER a shot.

Ruiner is an exceptionally stylish, brutal and bloody top-down shooter that hurls you unceremoniously into a relentless onslaught of deranged creeps, cyborgs and enormous mechanoid bosses all hellbent on your destruction. A steady drip-feed of new combat skills, alongside a ton of meaty guns and melee weapons, keeps the action feeling fresh, and the game's excellent graphics and thumping techno soundtrack do a top-notch job of bringing the whole thing vibrantly to life. There are a few framerate issues here and there in docked mode, something which has been an issue in other versions of the game, but, overall, this is a super-solid version of a supremely enjoyable and challenging cyberpunk action-adventure.

You’ll find beauty in RUINER if you play close attention. The kind of distorted beauty only cyberpunk settings can give. Of finding hope in its degenerate society and turning senseless violence into something greater than the mere showcase of death. Maybe you will pull its strings or, maybe, they will pull yours. Hauntingly evocative.

An excellent shooter wrapped in cyberpunk style and look that just impressed me every step of the way. Excellent ability tree and gameplay worked well but the presentation sealed the deal.

With its visual flair, dystopian world, and what appeared to be a penchant for tense and violent action, Ruiner has been on my radar for quite some time...

Ultra violent and very entertaining, Ruiner is quite an achievement. Not only does the game offer a meaty challenge, it doesn't bore and frustrate players with wave after wave of minions; each level is filled with just enough action to keep them invested. Some aspects aren't quite as polished as they could be but, again, a great soundtrack makes everything better. The effects could have also been dialled back a tad, but otherwise its inspired art direction is really impressive. On the merits of its presentation alone, this cyberpunk thriller deserves a look. Of course, it certainly helps that the rest of the game is solid, as well.

Ruiner’s fast paced combat and excellent atmosphere more than make up for its lack of replayability.

In a year crowded with incredible titles, Ruiner manages to be a standout anyways. The red neon-plastered world presented by Reikon Games is beautiful, brutal, and terrifying. With some impressive art direction, great music, and a wealth of immensely satisfying combat systems, Ruiner offers essential top-down gameplay, and comes highly recommended.

Ruiner is a truly magnificent ode to Akira and Ghost in the Shell. It builds a brilliant world with a lot of narrative undertones for you to grasp, should you wish to. The physical ultra-violence is only the entry point to the dystopian atmosphere of the game. All the gameplay elements are complex enough without being overbearing to the player. You'll find yourself easily juggling through skills while you deliver carnage. In Ruiner, everything seems to have fallen into place: artistically, narratively, technically. Give it a go, you'll be amazed at how good it is.

It's surprisingly fun. Just don't play it in Handheld mode, where you'll be struggling to see things (the Joy-Con sticks aren't necessarily up to the task, either). I will say there's a plot twist that could not have been more telegraphed, which was a little disappointing, but this isn't a game you're playing for depth of story. Ruiner is a good time and is definitely worth trying.
