How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Monster Hunter World takes a huge step towards a new audience, not simplifying, but simply optimizing the old overloaded mechanics. Old fans will be delighted. [OpenCritic note: Zelliel separately reviewed the PC (8) and PS4 (9) versions. The scores have been averaged.]

When a long fight with a monster culminates in other monster's invasion, and when you jump on the back of your prey after it starts to run away, it's hard not to be amazed by this game. A fantastic job by Capcom and a great start for 2018's AAA games.

After a long wait, high expectations, and some apprehension, CAPCOM brings us Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest installment in the legendary series that maintains its classic DNA while evolving. CAPCOM has managed to create a title that feels like a playground where veterans of the franchise can experiment, but also an excellent way to invite new players to immerse themselves in this world.

Monster Hunter World is structured in such a way where there's so many mechanics to consider, so many quests to take on, and so much procedural housekeeping to do that most players will be left too dizzy to really stop and think about the game's somewhat disquieting pitch.

All in all, Capcom has crafted a large, sprawling RPG that's addictive and entertaining without watering down any sense of depth.

It's not the worst console port I have seen, but it surely isn't the best one. The only real flaw of the PC version of Monster Hunter World is the buggy multiplayer mode. Everything else works just fine and deserves some attention, after all, this is one of the most captivating adventures in the virtual world ever.

Monster Hunter: World absolutely stands out as an astonishing, deep, compelling hunting experience that can keep most gamers entertained for dozens, if not hundreds, of hours. The aforementioned loop of "hunt, upgrade, repeat," works here better than ever before. Capcom has fine-tuned this series for over a decade, and their hard work pays off with this release. Some may have worried that with the recent release of Monster Hunter clones that others may have discovered ways to improve on this formula and take over the genre. Yet, Monster Hunter: World proves that Capcom is still king of this jungle. Long live the king!

Focus on your immediate goals and you'll be fine, and I feel like that's a big part of the beauty of Monster Hunter. You can put in as much or as little effort into it as you'd like but the experience will still be thoroughly enjoyable. Even if you played the game straight, without the optional content and doing the minimum of grinding, you've still got a good thirty to forty hours to go through. I'm at a hundred and fifty hours now, just building new weapons and armors to see what else the game can offer me, and I haven't had enough.

I enjoy tracking monsters, and using their resources to advance scientific research, but I also love spending time away from the hunt where I can learn the movements of not just the giant monsters but the smaller animals, too. Sure, any animal can be hunted, and I know the name of the game means some will have to die. But the moments of observance recreate the circle of life more than the game's story and left me most excited to return to Astera with my new discoveries, whether they were monster parts or something less grisly.

Despite a few minor flaws here and there, Monster Hunter World is a blast to play. The combat is exciting and varied, the spectacles are fascinating, and the aesthetics are on point. Whether you’re a newcomer or a veteran of the series, I highly encourage picking this up.

A small number of flaws barely make a dent; this is the quintessential Monster Hunter experience.

Monster Hunter: World still has all the complexity expected from this series, but it dishes it out in much more palatable chunks than usual. It's still got a frightening amount of depth, but it feels manageable in a way that few in the series have pulled off before. Players may still feel a little lost from time to time, but a little guidance from series vets or other friends can drastically reduce the growing pains new players will likely experience. On top of all that, this is one of the best-feeling titles the series has had to date; so saddle up with some friends, and explore all the New World has to offer.
