How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Detailed characters, vivid fights, and interesting bosses force the player to tear through a dark forest of cliched dialog and predictable plot twists. And that's quite the accomplishment for Granblue Fantasy: Relink, which has crawled out of the realm of smartphone trash.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a spectacular debut for the franchise on consoles and PC. It successfully transforms the series' mobile roots into a full-fledged action RPG, delivering stunning visuals, satisfying combat, and a memorable adventure through its beautifully crafted semi-open world. The game rarely feels constrained by its origins, instead embracing the scale and presentation expected from a modern JRPG while retaining the charm that made the franchise so popular in the first place. Although a few rough edges prevent it from reaching perfection, they do little to overshadow what is otherwise an excellent experience. Whether you are a longtime Granblue fan or completely new to the series, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys action-packed JRPGs with rewarding combat and a vibrant fantasy world.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Endless Ragnarok is a great new addition to the Switch 2 library, offering an exciting, addictive, and content-rich RPG experience that no genre fan will want to miss out on. Though its story is a little middling, the deep character-building options, gorgeous animations, and enormous amount of endgame content make for a game that you can easily drop a few hundred hours into and still want more.It feels like the kind of game that always deserved to be experienced on a portable, and I'd highly recommend you pick this one up if you're interested, especially if you have a high affinity for grind heavy action games like Monster Hunter or God Eater.

The biggest issue with “Granblue Fantasy: Relink” is its not-so-great camera, but that’s a small price to play in an RPG so full of amazing setpieces, well designed characters (from a mechanics standpoint), amazing quests and a very solid campaign. A fantastic entry to the “Granblue” franchise and a must play even if you never heard about it before.

The presentation is high quality with gorgeous cutscenes, epic battles, easy to pick up combat, and vivid storytelling. There’s nothing that ever knocks the wind out of its sails and always looks ahead to the vast blue skies, wondering what other stories there are to find.

The JRPG greats eventually grew to become genre stalwarts, and I certainly see a future where, upon great iteration and improved storytelling, Granblue Fantasy also gets there.

But in the end, Granblue Fantasy is still tucked away in my phone. Perhaps they thought that a console game like Relink was merely the best way to onboard new players. You can’t hit them with the toxic, cannibalistic lesbians (this is a thing that happened, and was fantastic) or the Lowain Brothers Hostess Club out of nowhere. Most recently in Granblue Fantasy, my Captain got canonically married in a parallel timeline to Catura. Catura is a big-titty cow girl who is the Divine Ox of the 12 Divine Generals. She loves milk, her sentient motorcycle named Milky, her parents, a little cow named Moomoo, and me. And now my big-titty cowgirl is one of the hardest hitting attackers I have on my Wind element team. When she does her ougi, we divebomb the enemies on her motorcycle in our wedding dresses. It’s amazing. And while I admit that this is definitely the energy missing from Relink, it did take Granblue some time to get here.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is an entertaining title, beautiful to look at and play, especially with friends. Unfortunately, the fast pacing of the story gives too little space to in-depth analysis of the characters. The technical side is not exceptional and not being able to handle 4K at 60 fps on PS5 today is a serious flaw for a developer like Cygames. However, all this problems magically disappear in front of the vastness of the sky of Zegagrande, accompanied by the music of Tsutomu Narita and the great Nobuo Uematsu.

So at the end of the day, despite everything that made this look like it was going to be a disaster, Granblue Fantasy Relink is not just an alright game. It’s a really good game, a delight in terms of action RPG gameplay, and easily a title that you can start sinking a huge amount of time into whether you know this crew or not. I’m excited for the prospect of more, from more characters to more stories. And if you’re looking for a new RPG to sink your teeth to at the start of the year, you already have a strong example.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a beautiful burst of fantasy anime colours with a good amount of substance to keep your action RPG tendencies sated. The wait for its release was a long one, but in gameplay, character selection, and music, it delivers to its fans and any action RPG fan looking for a Monster Hunter-like clone without the control "nuances". For first-time players of this franchise, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a good start. It may not be Final Fantasy but damn I felt that every hour I spent playing was not wasted.

There are many times that it is fun to just stop and look around, and the story and characters are a fairly tight package, which is appreciated. Battles are fast, if a bit consistent of spongy enemies. Its mobile roots are obvious, in relation to how equipment, upgrades and other characters work. Overall, there is not a huge sweeping story that will stay with you, but it's a coherent, high quality RPG that is solid across the board.
