How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a great metroidvania, that takes tropes from the genre and turns them into a joke. Humor aside, this is a fun title with a colorful world and interesting combat.

Over four years on and Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is still a 'rasslin riot that's well worth a play. Despite the passage of time, this colourful indie effort doesn't show its age and fits the portability of Switch down to the ground. If you've played it already on Wii U there's very little here to convince you to double dip (unless, of course, you've only played the 2013 version) - bar the ability to play in handheld mode - but if you've somehow missed this lovely luchador adventure, you'll struggle to find a better platform to play it on.

A love letter to all things videogame, Guacamelee! is a fantastic blend of homage and originality, resulting in a wildly memorable, if a bit short, Metroidvania. From the title's tight platforming-heavy level design, to its skill based combat, there is never a dull moment in Juan's quest to save El Presidente's daughter. Although the script does rely on out of place humour perhaps too often, and the general difficulty does take a hit near the end, this makes for a fantastic experience from start to finish, with plenty to love and admire. Best of all, at no point in its quest to pay tribute to the legends that came before it does this title forget to craft an identity of its own, elevating the title to the same level as the ones that inspired it.

Guacamelee is a fusion of intense platforming and beat-em-up combat, framed in Metroidvania conventions and topped off with a memorable cast, distinct setting, a stellar soundtrack, and zesty humor. These ingredients combine to make for a flavor that's genuinely fresh and incredibly satisfying.

If you've never played Drinkbox Studios' delicious platformer before, then this is the best place to start. And, while we'd never recommend double-dipping a nacho in real life, we certainly encourage it with this super-charged adventure.

The only shortcoming? You can wipe out the whole campaign in about five or so hours, and while there's plenty of extra content to take care of afterward (a "good" ending, for example, should you nail all the requirements), not much is there to revisit after game completion. But, while it's a short journey, it's one very worth playing. Oh, and did I mention the game is littered with pop culture (especially video game) references? I won't spoil them for you, but never thought I'd see a Super Mario RPG reference ever again.

The dialog is clever, and uses many pop culture and video game references that made me smile. That, along with the wonderful art style and fantastic soundtrack, makes it a very good deal for only $15. It has some big difficulty spikes, but overall Guacamelee is still a very fun time.

Were it a $60 boxed game, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The fact that it's available to you instantly and for less than half that, well, I don't need to finish that sentence, because you're not reading anymore.

It's still good old Guacamelee, but watered with a new sauce and tasty additions. STCE is by far the best and most complete edition of the game. Consider purchasing even if you have a PS3 or Vita version.

The proper use of its setting and merging it with the fantastical elements of Metroidvania genre coupled with some of most beautiful visual designs of all times have made Guacamelee! one the most enduring and endearing titles in a very saturated gameplay style.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a humour-ridden Metroidvania-style game that features a charming and fun plot, good character development and a marvelous visual environment. This experience looks certain to make everyone's days better and deserves to be given a chance beyond its core target audience.
