How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Freedom Wars Remastered is a welcome addition to the Switch that revives one of the PS Vita's most unique and enjoyable games. Its core gameplay is challenging and satisfying in equal measure, with plenty of customisable options and upgrades to keep you hooked. Sadly, the story often gets in the way of the fun, especially near the beginning, while performance upgrades on the Switch are kept to a minimum - understandable to an extent, but a shame nevertheless. Still, for both new and returning players, Freedom Wars Remastered is worth checking out if you enjoy battling giant monsters.

Close to 10 years since its debut in the VITA, “Freedom Wars Remastered” showcases how much Dimps was ahead of the curve when it comes to core gameplay and great online features. It’s more than a cult classic, it’s a must have for any player even slightly interested in games similar to Monster Hunter.

While not the most ambitious of remasters, Freedom Wars Remastered is still a hoot to play even after all these years. Its plot isn't the most engrossing, but it's serviceable enough and doesn't get in the way of the giant-slaying and team-based multiplayer action.

Freedom Wars Remastered returns with a sci-fi setting, offering an action-hunt experience that blends traditional hunting mechanics with its own unique narrative. Technical improvements and English dubbing are welcome additions, and the gritty world manages to hold the audience's attention. Despite some repetitive missions and overly complex menus, this remastered version remains a great option for fans of cooperative action or those looking to rediscover a pivotal title from the PS Vita era in a fresh new light.

FREEDOM WARS Remastered was still a joy to play. I'm really glad that titles like it are being revisited, and I hope that other rare Vita gems will fall back into our loving arms.

Freedom Wars Remastered is an excellent way to relive the restrictive action game. In 2025, the game's forward-thinking multiplayer components have a greater chance of capturing a dedicated community, and graphical and technical enhancements make it the definitive way to play. But it's a PS Vita game at its core; constant loading, dull characters, comparatively simple combat, and endless busy work have somewhat dented our rosy memories of the original game.

Freedom Wars Remastered is a second chance for those who couldn't experience the game initially or enjoyed the original version. Some of the problems present in the original, such as the confusing and strange story and the weak AI companions, are still present in this version. However, the visual graphics and gameplay sections have been well upgraded. If you are looking for exciting and fast-paced combat and can overlook some of the issues, this remaster could be a good option for you.

Freedom Wars Remastered masterfully remasters the cult classic from the PS Vita for the current generation of consoles, offering a very interesting and unique story, solid gameplay, on top of an addicting loot and endgame system that can entertain players for hundreds of hours. Unfortunately, the game lacks new content and inherits some of the issues that were present on the PS Vita, such as the sponge damage effect and the limited variety of enemies.

Freedom Wars is definitely something I'll go back to over time, because I've never managed to actually "complete the sentence" and I'm sure there's something insane at the end of it. If you think you can grasp the combat and missed it the first time around - the latter's most likely true - then it's time to plead guilty.

Freedom Wars Remastered is a fantastic game. Blending the best of Monster Hunter and adding some kick-ass movements and abilities with the Thorn system, I really want Bandai to bring this franchise back. I am so curious what a new entry into this series built from the ground up with the new tech would look like.
