OutRUN

DeanTheDev · released Dec 13, 2024

ActionAdventureIndieSimulationPCPlayStation 2Nintendo Switch

You play as two different people in the same creepy motel, and everything you think you know keeps changing. One moment you're Allison, running from something in her past, and the next you're Emma doing a late-night cleaning shift. You see the same events from totally different angles. You're JUDGE!

How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

It is fun for the first few minutes, but having to always drive through the same courses in order to reach the different courses can be very tiring.

The 3D really does work very well with the game. Still, I only suggest this for the hardcore 3DS players and Out Run fans.

Bringing Out Run to the 3DS under the name of 3D Out Run is an excellent way to get this Sega classic back into the stream. Keeping the same spirit as the 1980s racing hit, 3D Out Run is a perfect conversion to the handheld format and all that made the original game a cult classic is on its place.

SEGA has found a way to create an even better version of OutRun. Thanks to its 60 fps and the stereoscopic effect, OutRun looks as gorgeous as it did back in the eighties.

Simply, the best Out Run version out there, even without the Prancing Horse on the body. A timeless classic in your pocket.

By and large, though, this is a game that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who appreciates Sega and/or gaming experiences of the late 80s and early 90s.

28 years later, it's still a ton of fun, and even if you didn't play it in the days of old, you won't regret trying this unique experience.
