How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Summary: There's a scarcity of places to save your game, but it's not enough to pass on Xeodrifter. It's minimalism proves that there's still a place for simplicity, even on modern powerhouse consoles. It's like the first Metroid game only, you know, playable.”

“"Mixture of Metroid and Mutant Mudds is not a success story."”

“It's not an adventure for the faint of heart, but there's no reason that Xeodrifter should be overlooked by platforming fans, especially those missing a little Samus Aran in their lives.”

“What's remarkable about it all is that Xeodrifter crams this much into only a few hours. ”

“While certainly charming and cleverly designed for its short length, Xeodrifter ultimately feels too disjointed for its own good. Separating the overworld into four, smaller maps is a good idea in theory, but the disconnect between stages takes away the interconnected feeling of exploration Metroidvanias thrive on. Bosses themselves are also a big letdown, especially since the weapon customisation would lend itself well to more varied foes. It's even difficult to recommend Xeodrifter as a beginner's Metroidvania since the early game is far harder than everything that comes after. It's endearing enough and can kill an easy three hours, but there are better Metroidvanias to choose from.”

“A five month development cycle has resulted in a focussed and succinct sci-fi action adventure, which sets a fast pace to flow through its bright pixel art presentation, and waft along to its atmospheric chiptunes.”

“A bite-sized Metroid-like experience, Xeodrifter is a fun, exploration-heavy adventure from start to finish.”

“So long as the player expects nothing more from Xeodrifter than what it is very upfront about providing in terms of content, retro-aesthetic and gameplay, then it will be hard to feel disappointed after playing this game. It's not perfect, but there is a sincerity here that is likely to charm even the most sceptical of gamers.”

“I encourage everyone to give this title a download, though, as it’s an absolute blast to play, despite its shortcomings.”

“Xeodrifter isn't very inventive or creative, and unlocking bits of the map feels like busywork.”

“Its retro aesthetics adjust perfectly to its new ideas and despite its limited lifespan and very minimal plot, Xeodrifter has all the conditions for an intense and rewarding sidescrolling experience.”

“Wearing its Metroid influences like a badge of pride, Xeodrifter's 2D exploration is equal parts fun and frustrating. ”
