How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

It's better to play this game on PC. Console version is disappointing.

A generic RTS about WWII which will be more engaging for those who prefer to play slowly and use every little opportunity to succeed. Three campaigns could be fun for two evenings, but after that you'll hardly think about returning to Sudden Strike 4 ever again.

Sudden Strike 4 forgets what made the franchise great, a solid single-player content. With its lackluster campaign, bugs and terrible unit pathfinding, its best to skip it and play the classics.

Sudden Strike is back in the game. The fourth installment in the series guarantees some top-notch strategic gameplay even though there are some serious issues in need of fixing. My time as a WWII commander was well spent - hopefully all this means that the RTS genre will return in all its glory.

Sudden Strike 4's biggest takeaway is that market saturation means nothing in the face of a good game. Kite Games might not bring anything new to the table, but it does offer a refined RTS experience that sincerely has fun with the World War II premise. Five separate campaigns for a total of 25 missions give the single-player a considerable amount of longevity. The inclusion of the Battle of Dunkirk from both sides is a surprising, but welcome addition. A lack of base building traditionally found in most RTS titles gives each unit weight. Side missions, likewise, create a sense of urgency that feels right at home with Sudden Strike's aesthetic. While multiplayer does admittedly feel scarce, there's more than enough solid content in the single-player to make up for a lack of online material. World War II is far from the most original setting at this point, but that doesn't mean it can't still be fun.

Imagine what would have happened during World War II if Winston Churchill had issued orders and his subordinates had just stood still, slack-jawed, disinterested, and non-compliant. Or perhaps what would have happened if Johannes Blaskowitz had directed a battalion of German panzers to move through a tight alley in Stalingrad, only for the first tank in line to inexplicably grind to a halt four metres into the alley, leaving the rest of the squad to be picked off by Soviet anti-tank soldiers. Consider how Stalin would have reacted had he found out that an entire squadron of his finest Russian soldiers were indiscriminately wiped out when his own tanks blew up the building they were holed up in aiming at enemies on the other side of the structure. Thanks to a control scheme that doesn't make sense and sometimes doesn't do what it's supposed to, and appalling AI for both allies and enemy units, Sudden Strike 4 is a game that answers all of these questions and a bunch more you were probably afraid to ask.

Fans of the WWII era or the RTS genre, or both, will get the most out of Sudden Strike 4. It is a high-quality product in terms of graphics and immersion, and the title provides a great experience full of tense and satisfying moments. There's a lengthy campaign that'll take more than a dozen hours to get through, and multiplayer and skirmish modes offer endless playability. The multiplayer portion requires planning ahead with friends or joining the small online community. Gamers who are on board with all of that will be fine with buying the title now, but others may want to wait until the price drops a bit.

It's not a bad game, but it's still somewhat disappointing. If everything worked as it should, it would be a solid World War II RTS. However, the difficulty fluctuates, which is frustrating. The units' artificial intelligence is poor, and although the assortment corresponds to the chosen period, the parameters are not optimal and the overall balance is poor.

Sudden Strike 4 might appeal to strategy gamers who want a WW2 experience, but it doesn't deliver as much as it could.

A quirky, not very interesting trip to World War II excels only with its very solid visuals. It may be enough for newcomers, but veterans of the genre must find a new favorite elsewhere. [Issue#278]

A complete RTS if you are looking for a single player experience, but an awful online experience.
