How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Toaplan’s classic spaceship shooter makes a triumphant return with an excellent version that updates every aspect while preserving the classic gameplay. Truxton Extreme marks the return of a legendary series in the best possible way. I’d be lying if I said I found it accessible, since it’s one of the hardest games I’ve played in recent years, but at the same time, I’m glad that Tatsujin kept the essence intact. Easy games come out every day, but true challenges are few and far between.”

“Truxton Extreme is not only an outstanding shmup, but it also sets a new benchmark for how to bring back cult series of the genre into the current age. Very high marks on graphical effects, sound design, and soundtrack along with spot-on gameplay makes it easy to recommend adding this one to your Switch 2 library as soon as possible. Both veteran shmup players and newcomers alike will find much to enjoy in this package.You also get an outstanding digital graphic novel to go along with your game. Toaplan's legacy is in the good hands of Masahiro Yuge, and if this is the shape of things to come, I couldn't be more excited for future Tatsujin projects.”

“The tradeoff here is found in Truxton Extreme not offering much in the way of novelty outside of that adherence to its old school feel. Even with the inclusion of new modes and more direct control over your ship, there isn’t much here you couldn’t find in other releases in the genre, but the quality of the presentation and gameplay tension found in each stage is well worth the time investment for those who are up for it.”

“Truxton Extreme doesn’t reinvent the vertical shooter genre. Instead, it modernises a beloved arcade classic while preserving everything that made it memorable in the first place. The gameplay is fast, satisfying and wonderfully intense, the soundtrack is excellent, and the new visual style successfully updates the series without losing its identity. The biggest hurdle will undoubtedly be the difficulty. This is still a game built around persistence, practice and improving your skills over multiple attempts. Players looking for generous accessibility options or a more relaxed experience may bounce off fairly quickly. But if you’re someone who misses the golden age of arcade shooters, or you’re simply looking for a challenging action game that rewards mastery, Truxton Extreme delivers. It’s exciting, unapologetically retro, and proof that sometimes the old formulas still work brilliantly.”

“Yuge and the Tatsujin team have delivered an inspired sequel to a genre legend, adding new flavours to the vertical Truxton recipe that, in many ways, evolve the game into a modern entry in the genre rather than one that rides on its legacy. Adding Story Mode makes the game digestible for commoners and veterans alike without having to forfeit its demanding difficulty. The widescreen approach and a few concessions in the name of accessibility may tick some vertical shmup fans off, but this is more than a fitting sequel. It feels like the natural evolution of the 35-year dormant franchise.”

Extreme builds on that foundation rather than simply recreating it, using its wider battlefield, on-the-fly speed changes, weapon choices, and EX Boost system to create new decisions about positioning, survival, and score.
