How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince may be the best of the Trine series, and it certainly deserves your consideration. If it's been a while since you've played Trine 1 or 2, by all means, dig in. But if you're just now getting into the series via any of the multiple packages available, you may start to feel burnt out before finishing this particular chapter.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is a fantastic experience overall. It looks great, plays well, and is a blast in co-op. It does have some issues with regards to its combat sequences and controls, but it is a great game regardless.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is a real rehabilitation for Frozenbyte after the unsuccessful third game. Interesting locations with unique tasks, a great combination of skills and beautiful graphics will allow you to spend some great evenings in the company of light humor and favorite characters.

From start to finish, Trine 4 is a remarkably absorbing and beautiful experience that’ll keep you challenged and interested right through to the finish, while also offering a fair bit to keep you coming back for a couple hours after the credits roll.

...it is a puzzle platformer at its core, which will turn some people off, and the combat still doesn’t quite sing. But even the issues it does have are the sort that are ultimately none too difficult to overlook, just little bits and bobs that don’t reach the height set by other standout moments.

Trine 4 is the best game in the franchise, and a refreshing return to the series' roots after the ambitious-but-flawed third installment.

A quick admission, while I’ve always appreciated the beauty of the Trine series overall I was just never much of a fan of the overall experience...

If you’re looking for a charming, visually-spectacular, mechanically-satisfying platform-puzzler, that’s exponentially better with friends, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince offers up tons of content at half the price of a typical big-budget release.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince lacks in storytelling, but still is a massive improvement compared to Trine 3. Great puzzles, fun co-op and beautiful levels make this game worth the value.

Combat feels stiff and imprecise, but that feels like a mild quibble about such a consistently pleasing experience.

After a decade of seeing the series recommended everywhere, Trine 4 is my first time playing the series, and it’s made me realize just what I’ve been missing all these years.

Trine 4 is the proper sequel to the series and really reinvigorates my love for it. I still highly recommend playing with friends though as that is where it truly stands out.
